Women Who Moderately Drink Red Wine Stay Thinner & Lose Weight Easier!

Filed under: Wine — foodlover @ 3:56 pm

This month, The Archives of Internal Medicine just released the results of a thirteen year study that reported the fact that science has now medically proven the long time hypothesis that women who drink alcohol in moderation, particularly those who drink “red wine,” are far less likely to gain weight and will loose weight much quicker and easier, in comparison to those women who do not drink “any” alcohol at all!

According to Dr. Lu Wang; of the “Preventive Medicine and Aging” division of the Department of Medicine, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a 13 year study was conducted of 19,220 healthy, non-obese women from the United States, who were at least 39 years of old, carefully tracking these women’s health statistics to discover what they could determine about the role alcohol played in their life style and health.

Surprising to some, but hypothesized by many others, as it turns out, the data turned out to prove that women who were advised to stop drinking in order to avoid extra calories, actually gained more weight than any of the other test groups being tracked.

Meanwhile women who regularly consume moderate amounts of alcohol proved to be 30% less likely to gain weight than those who women who didn’t drink any alcohol at all.

After the thirteen years experiment, it was discovered that most of the volunteers had put on at least a few pounds and that now, approximately 40% of the ladies in the study had reached weights that put them in the category of “overweight or obese.”

However, those particular ladies who honestly “fessed-up” to enjoying a glass or two of wine, beer or a cocktail on most days of the week, proved to be much less likely to get fat and those who regularly drank a couple of glasses of wine, particularly red wine,” such as: Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Merlot, or Syrah / Shiraz, gained the least amount of weight than any other group of women in the study.

And exactly “why is this so,” you ask? Well according to some of the Scientists, Doctors and Researchers participating in the study, it seems to be a three-part answer, involving the facts that (A) alcohol calories are burned differently in the body than protein calories (B) alcohol increases the body’s metabolism and (C) women tend to substitute alcohol for other foods, such as many of the fattening and starchy, “high carb” or “high sugar” items that pound on the pounds, thereby quite naturally keeping their calorie totals relatively low in relation to ladies eating up the “C Foods” (cakes, cookies, crackers and candy) of the notorious “SEE Food Diet!”

Swine and Wine Party

Filed under: Bacon, Wine — foodlover @ 6:04 pm
Swine and Wine Club

Swine and Wine Club

With the ever-growing popularity of baconfreak.com’s Swine and Wine Club, I was thinking, how could we get as many people together to enjoy two of the finest things in life; bacon and wine. Why not try a Swine and Wine Party.

First, set the date, time and location. I was thinking a Sunday afternoon, not so late that you and your guests are feeling the effect the following morning.

Second, you need lots and lots of bacon.
Baconfreak.com has a wide variety of different bacon products. One specific kind of bacon that caught my eye was sun-dried tomato bacon. Why not pair the bacon with fresh mozzarella, on a toasted baguette for an easy light snack. Another easy and tasty bacon appetizer was something I found on Cooks.com. This recipe combines scallops, bacon and a sweet and sour sauce. Also, choose a few types of bacon to cook up and serve by themselves for your guest to enjoy, because what party isn’t complete without a few sweets to go along with the other food. Keeping with the theme of bacon, how about trying Bacon Chocolte Sueyts. These delectable delights pair the salty, savory flavors of bacon with the sweetness of dark chocolate for an unmistakable taste.

Lastly, to complete the swine and wine party, you are going to need the wine. I am going to suggest a wide variety of wine to complement the different flavors of the bacon and food, and suggest when hosting a swine and wine party yourself, doing the same. To match with the freshness of the bacon and mozzarella a nice Pinot Noir with its richness should bring out the flavors. With the Bacon Chocolte Sueyts nice Merlot would be a great match.

The most important thing to remember about a Swine and Wine party is to enjoy the good food, the good company and good wine.

Drinking a Toast To Oscar!

The Oscar’s is a night that can make a winner out of anyone. This Sunday is like the Superbowl for movies and moviegoers alike. The beauty of an event like the Oscars is that any kind of party to get together can be suitable. To celebrate the 82nd Oscar’s ceremony, I’ve decided to give my friends an opportunity to wear that old cocktail dress that’s hiding in the back of their closets.

Taking my cue from the celebration of the ceremony just miles from my own house, I may not get a red carpet but dinner and wines are definitely a must. With this year’s award ceremony recognizing the work of Meryl Streep with a Best Actress Nomination for her role as Julia Child in Julie & Julia what better choice for dinner than something from her cookbook itself.

More importantly than the French cuisine though would be to find a perfect French wine to compliment the food itself. Keeping true to the spirit of the awards being in California as well as our French dinner, a bottle of wine or two from the vineyard Lyeth might be perfect. Lyeth, a Coastal Vineyard’s favorite, is a vineyard located in California that’s traditions; processes and inspiration all come from France. My well-dressed guests are going to be treated to a dinner fit for the stars.

Now it’s time for the award show to start. To make the viewing of the actual awards a bit more entertaining for my guests I have two things planned. A betting pool, costing the price of a ticket to the very first Oscar’s of five dollars to participate. The guest that guesses the most winners correctly would win the money.

While the guest or guests to guess the correct winners for the top categories: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screen Play would win their very own Oscar. I plan this prize Oscar to be a bottle of wine. Maybe a bottle from Rotta, yet another featured vineyard in the Coastal Vineyard Wine Clubs, one of the oldest vineyards in California being founded only nineteen years before the first Oscar ceremony in 1927.

I might place one of the Rotta wines within an Oscar themed gift bag, taking a page from last year’s Oscar bags that actually did include a bottle of wine for celebrities. Or I could create Oscar statues out of bottles of Chardonnay , already a golden light color and perfect in shape and color for the craft. Coastal Vineyards features a great wine club for Chardonnay’s of just California wines that would be perfect for keeping in our California Movie theme.

Fancy Dresses, dinner, prizes and plenty of wine throughout the night the 82nd Oscars are going to be fun even for those of us on the outside of the Kodak Theatre. The winner of the night … anyone enjoying the show with me.

Winter In Napa – The Wine Country’s All There With No Need To Share!

Here’s one of the best kept secrets in the wide and wonderful world of wine. If you choose to take advantage of this insightful “Insider Information” you are guaranteed to experience an adventure that will create life-long memories that you will cherish forever and ever.

The truth is, if you really want to enjoy a complete tour of the entire Napa Valley Wine Country, without all of the loud crowds, long lines and high energy agitation, distraction that literally thousands of people can some how manage to bring to one of the nicest, most peaceful, relaxing and absolutely gorgeous environments on Earth, be sure to check it out during the winter months!

The Napa Valley Wine Country is a veritable wine wielding winter wonder-land during the off season, but I’m talking “Cool” because of how awesome the experience is, NOT with regards to the weather or the temperatures that you’ll experience.

Remember, this is the California Coast, where the wine is ALWAYS absolutely spectacular and where the gentle and peaceful Pacific Ocean can always be relied upon to keep the things relatively temperate and pleasurable year round.

You may want wait till around 10 am to allow the day to warm up just a little bit before you arrive, though I warn you, you will most definitely miss out on some spectacularly amazing sun-rises that will take your breath away.

Likewise, using the same logic and reasoning, you may want to leave just an hour or so after sun-down to avoid the eventual nippy chill that will settle in over the evening, put if you choose to stay longer, you will be surprised that’s it’s just not as cold as you might have feared.

Coming a bit later and leaving a bit earlier will still afford you way more time to get around and see everything, as there simply isn’t any traffic, crowds or lines to slow you down from doing whatever it is that you may want to do.

Harvest has already completed its annual cycle and the barrels, tanks and in some cases (pun intended) special boutique bottles have already been put to bed to be woken again much later in the future, so this is a perfect time to actually get a chance to talk with these expert vintners and winemaking craftsmen and craftswomen and get all of the inside information on what to look for over the next few years in the world of wine.

Here’s another big plus for you. In order to effectively entice crowds to come visit the Napa Valley outside of the typical, traditional wine country touring season, the prices of absolutely everything from the wine itself, to the restaurants and shops and from the local hotel accommodations to the local night-life is greatly reduced and in some cases (pun once again, intended) a steal compared to regular season charges.

The average daily temperatures in January will hover around 50 degrees and then will begin to start rising toward the 60s by mid February and March. The winter rains turn hills the most gorgeous deep green while the dormant vines almost look like Halloween decorations, very mysterious and almost magical set off by the lightly misty skies and lack of crowds and noise

Hint – hint … the very same posh and prestigious restaurants that you would normally have to wait an hour to get a table at … and then another 30 minutes to order your meal, will now have an entire staff of smiling faces, absolutely thrilled to see you and your business and willing to bend over backwards to ensure that you enjoy your experience, at prices that are most definitely worth joining in with the big group smile!

Meanwhile, the attention and help that you will get from the various shop owners and wineries themselves will allow you to fully grasp what it’s like to be royalty or among the rich and famous “Beautiful People” that you have always read and heard so much about.

Keep in mind that while wine tasting is a year-round pastime, it’s wise to g ahead and call ahead in advance to ensure whether or not the particular winery tasting rooms that you are interested in will be open at the times you want to arrive and remember that in the off season, some of these tasting rooms are available by appointment only.

If you’re truly ready to experience an amazing adventure in class, culture and absolutely astounding natural beauty and grace, I highly recommend you try exploring the Napa Valley Wine Country during the winter months at least ONCE in your life time. I promise you, that once you give it a try, it certainly won’t be the last time you do so!

Cheers!

Take Romance WAY BEYOND Valentine’s Day With These 5 Best Wines!

Filed under: Bacon, Celebration, Holidays, LOVE, Latest Posts, Romance, Wine — Tags: , , , , , — foodlover @ 12:37 am

Happy Valentine’s Day everybody! Today truly is a very happy day for wineries and special production vintners all around the world, who have come to truly and totally LOVE Valentine’s Day.

This appreciation of the “Holiday Of Love” comes from the fact that this is one of the very few days of the year when people are more likely to be drinking wine and usually drinking a much better quality of wine than that which can quickly an simply be “picked- up” at the corner “Gas Station Mini-Mart” or the gigantic, generic corporate “Mega-Mart” warehouse emporium.

That means this is one of those especially rare times of the year when people have a chance to actually experience a truly great glass or three of premium quality wine, as they fall in love and “into line” with the traditions and spirit of “Valentine’s Day” and all that it has come to stand for.

So how can these adventuresome folks who usually drink beer, Jack and 7, rum and coke or are normally teetotalers, best be served (pun intended) on this special day?

How about a simple guide to the 5 Best Wines, guaranteed to take Romance well beyond Valentine’s Day!

The best way to effectively and successfully use this guide; is for you to do a little bit of honest soul searching to most honestly determine precisely where you and your LOVE are on the wide spectrum of wine appreciation.

To help simplify the process, let’s simply break the entire range down into four very easy to recognize categories: Novice, Sophisticate In Training, Intermediate Aficionado and Consummate Connoisseur.

Novice: The novice or relative novice to the “wonderful world of wine” is most definitely in for a real treat by introducing themselves to either an enchanting Chardonnay if a nice White Wine is preferred; or an alluring Zinfandel if the traditional Red Wine is the choice and personal preference of the special couple.

Of course, since Valentine’s Day is a Holiday resplendently decorated in both red and white, you really can’t go wrong with either one of these excellent wines.

Chardonnay is by far the most popular white wine on the planet. It enticingly exudes and expressing itself in an amazingly wide range of aromatic flavors and essences, from its lush, rich and buttery oak overtones, to the vibrantly fresh and fruity flavors of apples, pears, citrus and melons, leaving a luscious and long lasting positive impression upon the palate.

So many people deeply LOVE Chardonnay, that it has come to be known as the official wine of deep love, and that sounds like a great place to start … and to finish.

Zinfandel is by far the most charming and versatile red wine on the planet Earth, with an exquisite flavor and exceedingly alluring aroma, that with finesse and grace can easily pose equally as comfortably and believably as blush or rose frequently favored by most wine novices.

Come experience this enticing air of complexity and mystique, drawing you into a vast multitude of mouthwatering essences displayed by this uniquely multifaceted wine.

Sophisticate In Training: For those people who regularly enjoy imbibing a nice glass of wine now and again, the Cabernet is the perfect choice of a Romantic evening of passion.

Cabernet This sophisticatedly fruit flavored wine has just enough seductive sweetness to make it both luscious and adoring, without being overtly sweet. You’ll thoroughly enjoy the intoxicating, subtle hints of everything from the most flavorful expression of black currant, blackberry, black cherry, cassis, and raspberry, with the musk-like allure and essence of tobacco, cedar, oak and even dried herbs and spices.

People these days so often over-use the erotic expression “an orgy of decadent flavors,” however, in this case, the assertion is quite well founded and completely true!

Intermediate Aficionado: The Intermediate Aficionado who has been loyally drinking wine for an extended period of time now has earned the right and privilege to move up the sultry sensuality of Syrah. Even the very name of this wine is both exotically charged and erotically alluring.

Syrah is a full bodied, dominantly lush and luscious, deeply scarlet colored wine, rich, dark and heady, commonly emanating the aroma of floral and fruity fares from black currants apple, cherry and blackberries to raspberry, citrus, blueberry and plums. What is even more spectacular is the mesmerizing finish, often lingering with a hint of chocolate, vanilla, oak, coffee, all-spice, cinnamon, anise and even a slight touch of pepper.

This is perhaps the most delightfully decadent red wine on Earth with a lush texture and impressive after-taste that, very much like an amazingly wonderful lover, continues to call you back again and again … and each time, it only gets better and better!

Consummate Connoisseur: For the Consummate Connoisseur, may I introduce you to the magically mystical Merlot, where the mythical wonders and glory of “Mer-lin” and “Came-lot” com together in a perfectly balanced blend, equaling this eminently enticing elixir known to human-kind only as “Mer-Lot!”

Merlot is a distinctly delectable, medium-bodied red wine with an amazingly wide range of explosively juicy fruit flavors ranging from cherries, currants and blueberries to black cherries, plums, and blackberries, often exuding an alluring essence of vanilla, oak, spice, coconut, musk, caramel, truffle, tobacco, mint or even slight sprinkling of black pepper.

The tannin levels in merlot are intentionally kept low, leading to a much smoother, less dry and acidic aftertaste than many people have commonly come to associate with and expect from a premium quality red wine.

This wine is so smooth and luscious, rich and decadent, that it will transform both your consciousness and your sense, literally blowing your proverbial socks off … along with other items of clothing that may be deemed in the way or unnecessary for a party of two!

This Sunday’s Super Bowl: The BF Swine vs. The CV Wine.

Filed under: Bacon, Entertaining, Gourmet Food, Lobster, Party, Wine — Tags: , , , , — foodlover @ 4:55 am

By Lesley Lopez

Not being an avid football watcher, there isn’t much I know about the anticipated game this Sunday. I have discovered this year it’s a match up between the Colts and the Saints, though even after some research on the teams themselves I still don’t really know which is favored to win. Aside from that I know that football is better experienced on a larger television and in groups, or so is the reasoning behind throwing a Super Bowl party.

When it comes to the party, I’m the quarterback of planners. Walking into any supermarket, I’m faced with the traditions and staples of all Super Bowl Sundays. Tortilla Chips, salsas, crackers, soda and beer in stalks around any market send the clear message: this is all you need for a successful party.

Not that I don’t agree, you could have a great party with just the essentials of what is right next to all the cash registers at your Vons. Not to mention the key selling point of no preparation time needed, just pull open the bags and set out the cans and you’re done. But this year, I want to stray off the beaten path and try a few things differently.

So veering away from the stalks of sodas, I headed towards the fruit section of the market. This year, I was thinking punch bowls of sangria for drinks. I picked up some pineapple, peaches, granny smith green apples, lemons and some ginger ale. Also on my way back towards the check out stands.

I caved and picked up some bean dip and chips because who can really have a Super Bowl party without tortilla chips? A new snack idea occurred to me. Recently I discovered a smoked mozzarella cheese from Boss Hog a part of the Swine and Wine Club featured through Coastal Vineyards and Bacon Freak. The gourmet cheese would be a perfect addition to either bean dip or a new twist on a platter of nachos.

Using a great bottle of wine from Vina Robles, featured as one of the Coastal Vineyards Wine Club selections I would be making chardonnay sangria. Now it might take some time to cut up all the fruit but not only can the pieces be used for the sangria itself but also for a selection of slightly healthier finger foods! Dumping all the chopped pieces into a bowl, I can pour in the wine and some of the ginger ale and presto like magic the sangria is finished.

I might even venture to make another bowl with a Merlot wine also featured in the Coastal Vineyard Wine Club. But maybe throw in some berries, club soda and triple sec into that one.

The possibilities are endless when making sangria, which means that my new Super Bowl tradition can be trying something different every year. Though, tasting the sangria with my new nachos I might not wait until next year’s Super Bowl maybe I’ll have a Oscars party too!

5 Things You’ll Definitely Need For Sunday’s Super Bowl Game!

With Super Bowl Sunday fast approaching (yes, the game is this Sunday), it’s time to take a close look at the top five things that make any Super Bowl party great.

1. A Big Screen TV: How can you watch the “Big Game: on a little TV? That makes no sense at all, so a Big Screen TV is an obvious “must” for any successful Super Bowl Party.

2. Snacks: The #1, all-time favorite snack food at Super Bowl parties is “Chips and Salsa!” But this isn’t just “any other” game, so just “any other” chips and salsa combo isn’t gong to cut it. If you’re looking for a salsa that will make a huge, memory making impression and pleasantly surprise your guests, check out this awesome “Mango Salsa” recipe.

Hey, if mango isn’t your thing, no problem my friend, check out the wide variety of salsa’s available from Coastal Vineyards, who even have a Gourmet Salsa Club offering the freshest and finest salsas available online, 24 hours a day.

3. Beer and Wine: Face it; nothing goes better with football than beer and wine. I myself prefer the suds and truly enjoy such fine brews as Blue Moon, Shiner Bock and Newcastle Brown Ale.

As for wine, there are so many excellent and varied vintages, styles and flavors to choose from. Personally I make it a point to try each of the different wines that are made available through Coastal Vineyards Wine Club, so that each month, I’m a little bit closer to being an educated “connoisseur” of the finer things in life.

4. Friendly Wagering: A long-time favorite activity at Super Bowl parties is a bit of friendly wagering. Not that I condone or recommend gambling, because, as everyone knows, that’s illegal, but there’s nothing wrong with betting a tortilla chip or two on such things as the final score, quarter-by-quarter scores, who wins the coin toss or next news breaking half time costume malfunction..

5. Half-time Entertainment: What are you going to do for the twenty minuets after The Who perform almost half a century of music in less than half an hour? Why not get everyone outside for a quick “pick-up” game of touch football.

Have fun, be safe and drive carefully!

Happy “Valen-Swine’s Day” from Coastal Vineyards!

Truth be told, gourmet culture can occasionally get a fickle and undecided, and numerous popular trends and fads in gourmet dining tend to pass from “pizzazz” into “passé” in a mere matter of months.

Such is NOT the case in the increasingly expanding and intensifying “Swine & Wine” craze that seems to just keep growing and growing by leaps and bounds on a weekly, if not daily basis.

So it was only a matter of waiting for the official “Holiday Of LOVE” to finally arrive so that Bacon Freak and Coastal Vineyards could once again come together in order to provide all “Culinary Cupids” with the absolute perfect gift for us all to celebrate a very Happy “Valen-Swine’s Day!”

As the “Swine and Wine” movement continues to gather loyal and dedicated adherents by the thousand, we are excitedly enthusiastic to affectionately serve the senses and sensibilities of all those who have “significant others” who truly appreciate the delightfully delectable delicacy of “Blue Ribbon, Gourmet, Country Style Bacon” served up with a very fine “Premium Quality, Small Production, Boutique Style Wine!”

In the wise and whimsical words of our “Promotions Director,” Larry L. Nichols, “For a long time now Bacon Freak has been brining people the most delicious, award winning, country style gourmet bacon. Meanwhile Coastal Vineyards has been providing the world with the very finest boutique quality, hard to find, small production wines found on the Planet. “

Nichols continues to explain that “it was then only a matter of time before the loyal club members and customers of both the bacon and the wine began to ask for a special combo pack of the two, and thus, “Swine and Wine” was born!”

What we have done is brought in a panel of associate “Master Chefs” to expertly pair each of the different bacons with a premium wine that matches the flavor in a most palate pleasing manner to create a “symbiotic symphony” of savory sensuality and sheer succulent seduction.

Sounds like a pretty successful Valentine’s Day to me.

Check it out right here and “Happy Valen-Swine’s Day” to you all!

South African Wines Taking The Gourmet World By Storm!

Filed under: Latest Posts, Wine, Wine Reviews — Administrator @ 11:33 pm

Some people observe the amazing popularity and fanatical connoisseur obsession with South African wines lately and assume this is just some sort of whirl-wind trend that has simply come to pass and will sputter out when the next “fashion” arises on the scene.

These people clearly don’t know their wine or their history. South African wines are well beyond merely being a temporary “hot ticket” item taking the entire world of premium quality, small production specialty gourmet wines by storm.

In fact, the truth is, as early as 1659, many South African wines, including the ever popular “Constantia” were enthusiastically proclaimed to some of the greatest boutique quality wines in the entire world.

Sadly, the uncertain political environment kept most of the world from being able to partake of the flavorful fountain of fruity freshness expertly put into every bottle. This of course led to South African wines being the hard to come by, rare specialty finds that ONLY the wealthiest and well connected gourmands and aficionados could afford to enjoy!

Since the fall of apartheid, South African wines have surged in international popularity with its recently found “open access” to world wide markets. This newly encountered “free and clear” pathway to the world has unleashed a tremendously gigantic burst of excited energy and new investment in this delectable delicacy, once limited to being the exclusive epicurean experience of the rich and famous.

The style of wines coming from this “reborn” nation seems to symbiotically straddle the New & Old Worlds, combining the ripe flavorful fruit of the former, with the traditionally elite elegance and rustic restraint of the latter.

Despite the exceptionally perfect warm climate, humidity levels and soil that leads to the ultimate red wines, South Africa had amazed the world with it’s equally impressive white wines as well.

Particularly beloved and renowned is the South African “Chenin Blanc,” also known around the globe as “Steen.” Of course the South African” Cabernet Sauvignon” and “Syrah / Shiraz” are absolutely mouthwatering! And if you have never tried the Cape’s own variety, called “Pinotage,” you are truly missing out!

Hey, why would you miss out! Coastal Vineyards Wine Club is proud to introduce you to our increasingly popular South African Wine Club. Come check it out for yourself and see why wine experts around the globe can’t get enough of the wonderful wines of South Africa! http://www.cvwine.com/southafrican/wineclub.html

Jacob Creek pairs chardonnay wine with Chips and Salsa for the Super Bowl

Filed under: Latest Posts, Wine — Administrator @ 10:57 pm

Like millions of Americans, Jacob’s Creek, the leading Australian wine company, plans on celebrating one of the most significant American sporting events with wine while watching the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals in football’s biggest game of the year. Whether feasting on pizza, nachos, or burgers while gathered around the TV, Jacob’s Creek offers the ideal food and wine pairings for an unforgettable viewing experience.

If you’re like me you will be eating foods like Chips, Salsa & Quesadillas while watching the Super Bowl and though you might throw back a few beers you’re likely to drink some wine. Jacob Creek has made some great recommendations on what types of wine to drink while eating this football favorite food. They suggest that if you are looking to cool down from the spicy salsa or a referee’s call you don’t agree with, they recommend that a bottle of Merlot offers a great cooling effect. Also, Chardonnay is a great option for anything that is corn-based such as tortilla chips or quesadillas.

Jacob’s Creek has been the most popular wine brands in Australia for more than a decade, and has grown to become the leading Australian wine brand in the UK, NZ, Ireland, Scandinavia and Asia with sales in excess of 8 million cases. Jacob’s Creek success can be attributed to its rich history and heritage, reflecting more than 150 years of winemaking expertise, the quality of the wine offer and the easy fruit driven wine style widely enjoyed by consumers across the world.
